The Ayetoro Digital Museum is a living archive dedicated to preserving and celebrating the unique cultural and architectural heritage of Ayetoro, a coastal community in Ondo State, Nigeria.
Founded through the support of the Gerda Henkel Stiftung (Patrimonies Programme) and implemented by the Green Institute, the museum emerged from an urgent need to safeguard the memory of a community increasingly threatened by climate change, coastal erosion, and sea-level rise.
Our mission is to document, preserve, and share Ayetoro’s stories, traditions, and built heritage using digital tools that ensure access for generations to come. Through photographs, oral histories, community narratives, and cultural artefacts, we connect the past with the present while inspiring resilience for the future.
What We Do
• Heritage Documentation – Capturing Ayetoro’s distinctive vernacular architecture, rituals, and cultural practices.
• Digital Collections – Hosting curated archives of images, artefacts, and community stories for global access.
• Community Engagement – Involving local residents, especially women and youth, in telling their stories and shaping the narrative.
• Education & Awareness – Providing resources, exhibitions, and learning tools to highlight the importance of cultural preservation in the face of climate threats.
